My Christmas gift to Patrick last year was a large 55 gallon aquarium that I found on Craigslist. We both love aquariums and with our schedules right now, fish are the most logical pets we can have!! The tank has been in storage for months because we haven't had time to set it up and more importantly had not yet picked a spot for it to occupy in our home...both issues which are now resolved! We have spent the last several weeks setting it up, buying starter fish, and waiting for the nitrogen cycle to begin. Out of the first 8 fish we put in, 5 died...so we waited another two weeks before adding any more. On Saturday, we went to Petsmart and bought six fish (two of three different kinds...Patrick insisted they each have their own friend...) and had a much better survival rate. Our tank of 3 had increased to 9!

One of our 2 dalmation mollies...
The next morning, we went down to feed them and found that one of our new additions had surprised us with a batch of fry (the technical term for baby fish...we're learning alllll about this...). At first, we only thought there were 7 or 8...but when we got home from church and started fishing them out, we realized that many (MANY) were hiding...we ended up with 30-40 baby fish in our little baby tank that sits in our 55 gallon tank...oh my. :) Two days later, the "friend" of our first dalmation molly had her own set of fry...so, we're up to around 40-60 babies now! We are hoping that our local pet store will take them off our hands once they get bigger...if not...well, we don't yet have a plan b. :)
If anyone wants a free fish, come see us!!
